Tire Pressure Monitoring System
A tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is an electronic system designed to monitor the air pressure inside the pneumatic tires on various types of vehicles. These systems are usually battery operated and can send information about the pressure of a tire to a dashboard or other display inside the vehicle.
TPMS
These systems became popular just after the famous “Firestone Tire/Ford Explorer” accident phenomena, where an abnormally large number of Ford Explorers were getting into single car accidents. Upon investigation, it was found that a large number of SUV owners were neglecting to check and maintain proper tire inflation. As this was a global issue, some governments began to mandate that vehicles in the future be equipped with tire pressure monitors. In 2007, all new vehicles were required to have a tire pressure monitoring system that would send pressure information to the driver.
These systems are also in use on large trucks, SUVs, and even larger recreational vehicles. They are also available as an aftermarket item, with additional features not seen on factory systems.
Tire sealants
Owners must be careful when using tire sealants, as not all sealants are compatible with TPM sensors. Sometimes the sealant can be removed, however in most cases a sealant-covered TPM sensor should be replaced with a new unit.
A properly operating TPMS can give your vehicle these benefits: Better fuel mileage, increased safety, longer tire life, and decreased downtime from improper maintenance.
If one wheel is continuously showing a lower pressure, or if you see any other indications of TPM system malfunction, get in touch with us. We’ll check it out and let you know what is required for proper operation. Whether it’s a sensor, display or any other component, we know you’ll breathe easier knowing your vehicle is safe and riding on the proper tire pressure.
